Summary of Position
The Pastor of Family Ministries shall fulfill the responsibilities of the minister in the spirit of 1 Timothy 3:2-7, and as set forth in paragraphs 532 of the Manual: Church of the Nazarene 2013-2017. The Minister is also expected to live in harmony with the Covenant of Christian Character and the Covenant of Christian Conduct of the Church of the Nazarene as stated in the Manual. Employment shall be in harmony with the Manual and the Lead Pastor shall be amenable to the District Assembly for the exercise of his/her office in accordance with paragraph 536.0.
General Expectations: (for all pastors and ministers and directors)
The spiritual character and integrity of the individual who serves as Pastor of Family Ministries is extremely important. Additionally, the minister should demonstrate administrative skills, be a team leader, possess spiritual sensitivity, and exhibit these qualities in everyday life. The minister acknowledges the responsibility to act in the best interest of The Cross Church of the Nazarene at all times, and is expected to conduct his/her private and public life in a manner, which will not embarrass the church. Additionally, all pastors, ministers, and directors are to have an experience of salvation, baptism, and sanctification. They are to share their faith, promote the spiritual good of the church, serve the community, and express the love of God to all those with whom they have contact. The Pastor of Family ministries will adhere to all policies and procedures of The Cross Church of the Nazarene.
Areas of responsibility
The Pastor of Family Ministries is the advocate for the generations of the church and will oversee the structures and atmosphere of the church to ensure that the family of God is working together to make disciples of the next generation. He or She is first an advocate for the young (children, youth, and early adults) because these are the people who are least knowledgeable and least experienced in the Christian life. He or She is next an advocate for the parents of these young people because they are in the greatest position to influence the young. He or She is third concerned for other mature adults because they have an important role in the discipleship and mentoring of parents and young people, alike. The position is part-time up to 30 hours a week with a 120-day probationary period to assess fit and budgetary issues.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Pastor of Family Ministries
The Pastor of Family Ministries will oversee the discipleship systems from cradle to college and to their parents. The Pastor will work closely with the adult discipleship leaders to ensure that parents are prepared to lead their children and that young people have spiritual mentors when their parent cannot be the model.
Church-Based Ministries
• Oversee relational, engaging ministries to children and youth. This includes but not limited to leading the children’s Church every week, giving a children’s message once a month during the worship service, and leading the pre-teens and/or teens. These different roles can be reviewed dependent upon the engagement of the children and youth.
• Ensure that the curriculum used at each level of spiritual development connects to the next.
• Ensure that ministry leaders connect regularly to the homes so parents experience a clear partnership in the discipleship of their children.
• To conduct training’s for volunteers associated with children and youth. Will make sure that all volunteers are Ministry Safe trained at a minimum.
• To periodically review church policies and programs with appropriate staff or committees and bring recommendations for needed changes and improvements to the Pastor and church board.
• Develop and expound a vision that leads to a focus on teaching Bible knowledge and demonstrating living Christian faith through the relational interact between the pastor, other leaders and the young.
• It is expected that the Pastor of Family Ministries will attend the district children and teen camps. Concerning all other district events the Pastor of Family Ministries is highly encouraged to attend. Attending ministry team meetings is expected.
• To help as needed with Church activities and functions.
Parent Training
• Develop and implement a plan for on-going parent training and encouragement.
• Oversee training that lead parents into a biblical study to help them understand their role and responsibilities.
• Coach parents and children privately on specific issues in their family.
Intergenerational Connections
• Encourage intergenerational gatherings to help the young and all generations to recognize how God is working in the whole family of God.
• Work with the senior pastor and other ministry teams to ensure that there are opportunities for all generations to worship, learn, and serve together.
Equipping and Encouraging Parents
• Work with ministry leaders to bridge the gap between what children and youth are learning in their programs and what adults are learning in theirs.
• Guide ministry leaders in selecting or developing a curriculum that is cohesive from birth to adulthood and that is helps parents to complement the church learning with home learning.
• Develop channels of resources that allow the parents to lead in their home in such a way that corporate unity is maintained.
