Overview
The Worship Leader provides spiritual, musical, relational, and organizational leadership for the worship ministry of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
The Worship Leader is responsible for cultivating a Christ-centered, Spirit-led worship culture that invites people to encounter Jesus, grow as disciples, and participate fully in the life and mission of the church.
This position provides clear leadership and direction for the worship ministry while developing and empowering musicians, vocalists, and other worship ministry volunteers to use their gifts effectively.
The Worship Leader works closely with the Lead Pastor to ensure that worship gatherings support the biblical message, mission, vision, and ministry direction of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Spiritual Leadership and Worship Culture
•   Cultivate a Christ-centered and Spirit-led culture within the worship ministry.
•   Model a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, personal integrity, spiritual maturity, humility, and servant leadership.
•   Encourage worship team members to understand their role as spiritual leaders and ministers rather than simply musicians or vocalists.
•   Pray regularly for the worship ministry, worship team members, church leadership, congregation, and people who do not yet know Jesus.
•   Participate faithfully in the worship, discipleship, and ministry life of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
•   Help create a worship environment where people can encounter God, respond to Scripture, and take meaningful steps of faith.
2. Worship Service Planning
•   Work collaboratively with the Lead Pastor to plan worship gatherings that support teaching themes, sermon series, the church calendar, and the overall mission and vision of the church.
•   Select weekly worship songs and develop balanced song rotations that serve the congregation and support the direction of each worship gathering.
•   Select and prepare closing songs and response moments that reinforce the biblical message and provide opportunities for the congregation to respond to God.
•   Plan worship services with attention to theological integrity, congregational participation, musical flow, transitions, timing, and overall service direction.
•   Introduce new songs thoughtfully and strategically while maintaining a healthy balance of familiar songs that encourage congregational participation.
•   Coordinate special worship services, seasonal gatherings, and other church events requiring worship ministry involvement.
3. Musical Leadership
•   Provide musical direction during rehearsals and worship services.
•   Lead the worship band in developing arrangements, transitions, dynamics, tempo, instrumentation, and overall musical quality.
•   Ensure musicians are prepared for rehearsals and worship services by providing appropriate resources, arrangements, charts, recordings, and communication.
•   Establish and maintain appropriate musical standards while recognizing the developmental nature of volunteer ministry.
•   Coach and develop musicians to grow in musical ability, preparation, teamwork, and worshipful engagement.
•   Maintain and update worship ministry iPads, digital music resources, charts, arrangements, and other materials used during rehearsals and worship services.
•   Provide leadership and direction for worship vocalists.
•   Prepare vocalists for rehearsals and worship services by communicating expectations, assignments, harmonies, arrangements, and other necessary information.
•   Lead vocal rehearsals and provide coaching related to blend, harmony, timing, confidence, stage presence, and worshipful engagement.
•   Develop additional vocal leaders who are capable of leading songs and worship gatherings.
•   Encourage vocalists to grow spiritually, relationally, and musically.
4. Worship Team Development
•   Recruit, audition, onboard, train, schedule, encourage, and develop worship ministry volunteers.
•   Identify and develop musicians, vocalists, worship leaders, and other volunteers who demonstrate potential for increased ministry responsibility.
•   Build a healthy worship ministry culture characterized by spiritual growth, preparation, excellence, humility, accountability, encouragement, and teamwork.
•   Provide regular coaching, encouragement, feedback, and appropriate correction to worship team members.
•   Address relational, behavioral, performance, or preparation concerns within the worship ministry in consultation with the Lead Pastor when necessary.
•   Develop systems that allow the worship ministry to grow beyond dependence upon any one musician, vocalist, or leader.
5. Scheduling and Communication
•   Develop and maintain worship team schedules for rehearsals, worship services, and special events.
•   Communicate schedules, song selections, arrangements, rehearsal expectations, and other relevant information to worship team members in a timely manner.
•   Ensure positions are adequately staffed and work proactively to address scheduling needs and volunteer shortages.
•   Maintain accurate worship ministry information within the church’s scheduling, communication, and worship planning systems.
6. Rehearsals and Worship Services
•   Plan and lead effective rehearsals that prepare the worship team musically, spiritually, and relationally.
•   Begin rehearsals and worship ministry gatherings with prayer, Scripture, devotional encouragement, or other appropriate spiritual formation practices.
•   Establish clear expectations regarding preparation, punctuality, participation, and communication.
•   Provide leadership during worship services and respond appropriately when unexpected musical, technical, or service-related issues arise.
•   Work collaboratively with pastors, ministry leaders, production volunteers, and other participants to ensure worship gatherings are organized and effective.
7. Production and Technical Coordination
•   Work collaboratively with sound, media, livestream, lighting, and other production volunteers to support effective worship gatherings.
•   Communicate service plans, arrangements, transitions, and technical requirements to production volunteers in advance.
8. Administration and Ministry Stewardship
•   Maintain appropriate records, schedules, music resources, ministry documents, and worship planning information.
•   Steward worship ministry equipment, instruments, technology, and financial resources responsibly.
•   Provide recommendations regarding equipment purchases, repairs, replacements, and other worship ministry needs.
•   Operate within established church policies, ministry procedures, and approved budgets.
9. Leadership Accountability and Collaboration
•   Serve under the leadership and direction of the Lead Pastor.
•   Meet regularly with the Lead Pastor for worship planning, ministry development, evaluation, communication, and spiritual accountability.
•   Support the mission, vision, doctrine, values, and ministry direction of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
•   Work collaboratively with pastors, staff members, ministry leaders, and volunteers.
•   Receive feedback, coaching, and direction with humility and a willingness to grow.
•   Communicate concerns, ministry challenges, volunteer issues, and significant worship ministry needs to the Lead Pastor in a timely manner.
Qualifications
The Worship Leader should:
•   Demonstrate a growing and authentic relationship with Jesus Christ.
•   Demonstrate spiritual maturity, integrity, humility, teachability, and servant leadership.
•   Support the doctrine, mission, vision, values, and ministry direction of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
•   Possess the musical ability necessary to provide effective leadership for musicians and vocalists.
•   Demonstrate the ability to lead worship effectively and encourage congregational participation.
•   Possess strong relational, communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
•   Demonstrate the ability to recruit, develop, empower, and lead volunteers.
•   Be dependable, prepared, responsive, and able to follow through on ministry responsibilities.
•   Demonstrate the ability to receive feedback, resolve conflict appropriately, and work collaboratively with church leadership.
•   Be committed to continued spiritual, musical, and leadership development.
Time Commitment
The Worship Leader should expect to invest the time necessary to faithfully lead and develop the worship ministry, including:
•   Weekly worship planning and preparation.
•   Song selection and service development.
•   Communication with worship ministry volunteers.
•   Weekly rehearsals and worship services.
•   Volunteer recruitment, development, and pastoral care.
•   Meetings with the Lead Pastor and other ministry leaders as needed.
•   Special services, seasonal gatherings, and church events requiring worship ministry involvement.
Because this is a volunteer ministry leadership position, expectations regarding workload, availability, and ministry responsibilities will be regularly evaluated in consultation with the Lead Pastor to ensure the position remains sustainable and effective.
Ministry Success
Success in this position is not measured solely by musical excellence or the quality of worship services.
The Worship Leader is successful when:
•   Jesus Christ remains the focus of the worship ministry.
•   Scripture, prayer, worship, and spiritual formation shape the culture of the worship team.
•   The congregation increasingly participates in worship rather than simply observing it.
•   Musicians and vocalists are being recruited, developed, discipled, and empowered.
•   New worship leaders and ministry volunteers are being identified and developed.
•   The worship ministry demonstrates preparation, excellence, humility, unity, and spiritual maturity.
•   Worship gatherings support the biblical message and mission of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
•   The worship ministry is healthy, sustainable, and capable of growing with the church.
Ministry Relationship
The Worship Leader serves as a ministry leader of South Lake Church of the Nazarene under the authority and direction of the Lead Pastor.
The Worship Leader is entrusted with meaningful responsibility and leadership within the worship ministry while remaining accountable to the mission, doctrine, leadership, policies, and ministry direction of South Lake Church of the Nazarene.
