Position Description: NextGen Pastor/Associate Pastor

Plattsburgh Church of the Nazarene: Plattsburgh, New York is on Lake Champlain in the Champlain Valley of the Adirondack region of upstate New York. The city is nestled between the Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Plattsburgh is 25 minutes from the Canadian border, and approximately 1 hour south of Montreal. The area is known for its outdoor activities including fishing, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, swimming, and camping. Plattsburgh Nazarene is strategically located in the hub of the city. It is southeast of downtown, a short drive from NY Interstate 87, and within walking distance of SUNY Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh schools, the hospital, shopping, and restaurants. The neighborhoods closest to the church are comprised of households with an age range of 35–55 and most have families. The area also includes a great deal of young adults. Plattsburgh Nazarene is comprised of a variety of people with a congregation size of 150–160 with a potential for growth.
Vision and Purpose: It is the vision of Plattsburgh Nazarene to reach families through ministry to children and youth. Under the supervision and support of the Senior Pastor, the NexGen Pastor will lead in the ministry to students grades 6–12 with the goal of reaching families with the gospel and helping them grow in Christ. With the assistance of the Senior Pastor, the NextGen Pastor will be responsible for balancing between church, family, and personal time.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a clear and well-articulated call to vocational ministry to add to the pastoral staff of Plattsburgh Nazarene.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in ministry, theology, religion, or biblical studies is preferred; a Master of Divinity degree is strongly preferred, but is not required
• Experience: Previous work in ministry is preferred; the ideal candidate will testify to a call to youth ministry
• Ministerial Credentials: Candidates should be ordained or licensed in the Church of the Nazarene
• have a growing relationship with the Lord
• must be a biblical steward of finances—consistent tithing and giving practices are essential and expected
• a willingness to engage fully in the life of Plattsburgh Nazarene
• has an affinity for continuing education
• effective communicator and passionate faith-sharer
• has a passion to reach students and help them spiritually thrive
• understands basic adolescent development and is familiar with contemporary youth ministry strategies
• possesses ability to be flexible and to create and manages systems in a rapidly changing environment
• willingness to work in positive ways with the Senior Pastor and leadership team
• has a passion for partnering with parents
• has a passion to create an environment for spiritual growth in students
• must be proactive and efficient, able to work both independently and with others
• must be timely and consistent in weekly responsibilities
• must interact with church staff and guests in a respectful manner
• must be flexible with ability to adjust her/his schedule to suit the needs of the church
• must pass a criminal background check
Responsibilities: There is the expectation that leadership will be given to these areas whether through the NextGen Pastor or volunteer leadership. The Senior Pastor will help the NextGen Pastor navigate through these responsibilities. Current youth ministry programming includes Sunday school, Youth Group, monthly activities, Teen Camp, Fall Retreat, Trunk-or-Treat, Back-to-School bash, and NYI Convention.

• lead the enlistment, training, and support of student leaders, parents, and volunteers
• work with ministry leaders in promotion, planning, and implementation of activities and events
• act as the coordinator of student activities including Sunday school, special events, District/Regional NYI
• ensure a positive and supportive environment that attracts students and their parents
• work to build strong, supportive relationships
• additional duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor (i.e., pulpit supply, administrative duties, visitation)
Evaluation: The NextGen Pastor will offer monthly reports to the Church Board while communicating on a weekly basis with the Senior Pastor. The Senior Pastor will conduct a yearly review in an effort to evaluate both the position’s effectives as well as the minister’s effectiveness. This staff position reports to the Senior Pastor primarily and the Church Board secondarily.
Compensation: This is a full-time staff pastor position, and it is compensated through housing and a weekly stipend. Housing includes heat, electricity, cable, trash pick-up, and snow plowing. Any additional compensation or benefits, including vacation time, will be determined by the Senior Pastor and the Church Board based on the candidate’s experience.
