Worship Leader Job Description
Position Summary
Leesburg Church of the Nazarene is seeking a passionate and dedicated Part-Time Worship Leader to guide our congregation in meaningful and authentic expressions of worship. This vital role requires a proven blend of musical talent, spiritual maturity, and strong leadership abilities to create an engaging and spiritually enriching environment. The Worship Leader will serve as a pivotal figure, collaborating with pastoral staff and a team of volunteer musicians to thoughtfully plan and execute weekly worship services that align with the vision and theology of our church. This is a part-time position designed for an experienced leader who is motivated by service and committed to ministering to our unique community. A successful candidate will understand they are a spiritual guide and cultural architect, not a performer.

Core Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Part-Time Worship Leader are comprehensive and require a collaborative, servant-hearted approach. The primary duties include:

  • Plan and Lead Worship Services: The Worship Leader is responsible for thoughtfully planning and executing weekly worship services, as well as special services and events. This includes working closely with the pastor and other staff to select and arrange songs that align with the theme and purpose of each service. The leader must be flexible and skilled in balancing various worship styles, including contemporary songs and timeless hymns, to ensure the music resonates with the entire congregation.
  • Lead and Develop the Worship Team: A critical component of this role is the recruitment, training, and ongoing mentorship of a team of volunteer musicians and vocalists. The Worship Leader will conduct and lead rehearsals to ensure a polished and synchronized performance, providing clear musical direction and guidance on dynamics and interpretation.
  • Foster a Culture of Worship: The leader is tasked with creating a spiritually engaging atmosphere that encourages congregational participation and fosters a sense of unity and spiritual connection. This involves modeling heartfelt and authentic expression of praise, and working to draw individuals closer to God.
  • Technical and Administrative Oversight: This position includes overseeing the technical aspects of worship. The Worship Leader will coordinate with audio, lighting, and visual teams to ensure seamless execution of services. Additionally, the leader will be responsible for maintaining the church music library, managing musical equipment, and ensuring all necessary supplies are in place.
  • Pastoral and Team Integration: The Worship Leader will participate in regular worship planning meetings with the lead pastor and other pastoral staff, contributing ideas and collaborating on the schedule and themes of upcoming church services. This integration ensures that the worship ministry supports the overall mission and vision of our church.

Required Skills & Professional Experience

  • A proven track record of recruiting, training, and leading musicians and vocalists is essential. The candidate must have demonstrated experience in a local congregation.
  • Proficiency in playing a primary instrument (e.g., piano or guitar) and strong vocal abilities are required.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. The ability to manage logistics and work collaboratively with others is crucial.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and a high degree of interpersonal awareness are necessary for leading diverse groups of people.
  • A broad knowledge of various worship music genres, including hymns, is critical for serving our church.
  • Proficient with Google Suite, ProPresenter, and Microsoft Excel.
Experience directing a choir is a plus.

Spiritual and Personal Qualifications

  • A deep, professed Christian faith and a vibrant personal relationship with God are foundational. The candidate must be actively involved in a local church.
  • A genuine passion for worship and a heartfelt desire to lead others spiritually.
  • A collaborative and servant-hearted spirit, with the ability to work effectively within a team environment. The role requires a “whatever it takes” mindset.

Cultural Alignment with our church Core Values
The ideal Worship Leader for our church is a person of strong character, whose actions and mindsets are a living embodiment of our core values. We believe that who a person is, and what they believe, is as important as what they can do. The successful candidate will not only possess the required skills but will be a natural fit for our team culture.

  • Humility: We seek a leader who is teachable and understands their role is part of a greater mission. This individual will be able to see their own strengths and weaknesses and will avoid operating in a silo, seeking feedback from pastoral staff and the worship team to serve the congregation effectively.
  • Hunger: The ideal candidate is self-motivated, driven by the mission, and a consistent learner. They approach their role with an “I get to do this” mindset and are consistently seeking to grow in their musical and spiritual skills to better serve the team.
  • Relationally Smart: A successful candidate possesses a high relational IQ, navigating diverse personalities with sensitivity and engaging in healthy, constructive dialogue. They are aware of how their own personality impacts others and are committed to healthy interaction with the team, even when facing difficult conversations.
  • Creativity: We are looking for a creative mindset that overcomes problems and initiates change to propel movement. This leader is not paralyzed by problems and understands that the best idea wins, regardless of its source. This creativity is vital for balancing traditional and contemporary worship styles.
  • Get it Done Attitude: The right candidate takes ownership, finishes what they start, and is committed to the goal. They have the internal drive to rally around a shared objective without giving up and take responsibility for the results. This mindset is critical for the administrative and team development aspects of the role.
  • Positivity: This role requires the ability and desire to inspire and rally others toward a common goal. A successful candidate will be a source of motivation for the worship team and the congregation, maintaining a constant connection to the “why” behind their efforts.
