As outlined in the Five Levels of Leadership (Maxwell), Springfield First is looking for a pastor/leader who is an established Level Three Leader (competent in leading themselves and others), with solid indications of growth into Level Four Leadership (the ability to reproduce themselves in other leaders). A Level Three leader will maintain the current level of Springfield First, but without quality leadership reproduction and a leadership pipeline, the church will not be able to respond to growth beyond 200 in weekend worship attendance.
The greatest structural barrier to becoming more effective in making disciples would be the inability to appropriately train and empower other leaders to do the work of the church and make disciples. This requires a well-defined leadership development plan and a clearly shared vision.
Top Desired Characteristics Include:
- Must have a proven ability to develop leaders who develop leaders.
- Must be a dynamic and relevant preacher. This includes the ability to preach to the pre-Christian, the new believer, and the mature Christian in the same sermons.
- Must relate to the unchurched and those far from God. This includes the ability to develop relationships in the external community as well as within the church.
- Must have strong people skills and be drawn to engage with people.
- Must have an inner drive to accomplish the Great Commission—refusing to settle for the status quo when many in the community remain unreached.
- Must be strong in sharing vision about the future, with the ability to communicate it in a way that others see it, affirm it, and own it.
- Must value others enough to invite them into action groups and leadership roles, utilizing their unique gifts to accomplish the mission. This includes recruiting, training, delegating, following up, correcting, and encouraging.
- Must be resilient and productive in conflict. Should be able to project peace and poise while navigating conflict, valuing everyone involved, without being paralyzed by a desire to please all.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience and understanding of how to structure and manage ministry in a church with 200+ weekend attendance.
A broader perspective of the Great Commission—an internal Kingdom drive to plant effective churches and replicate the best of Springfield First in neighborhoods that need Jesus.
Experience in hiring, structuring, evaluating, and managing staff effectively.
These are the key characteristics we believe are necessary for Springfield First’s next season.
Mission of the Moment:
As Springfield First renews its focus on reaching more people in the community and strengthens its efforts to guide individuals along a clear and effective discipleship pathway, the church is poised to thrive and grow significantly. This renewed mission will enable Springfield First to make increasing numbers of disciples who, in turn, make more disciples—expanding the church’s impact and deepening its effectiveness in reaching the local community.
Springfield First is committed to developing stronger pathways for maturing new disciples while preserving its core identity: a passionate drive to reach those far from Christ in their own neighborhoods.
